John Les's profile

Redress Design 2018

My design inspiration was inspired from architectural buildings that convey structure and the connection between nature and technology. Some of the architecture were very contemporary and modern. Tying this with nature, this compelled me to design pieces that correlated with "connecting".

Going into my last school year I've learned a lot from research projects that related to fast retailer's supply chains, and learning that our industry is the 2nd most polluting source to our environment. This shook me to take action in the industry and be a part of a generation that will make the change. Slow fashion to me as a designer is something I continue to learn more about and will further expand my knowledge on how we can change our future to prevent climate change, and save the corals.

I felt this competition holds true to my design process as I felt being a perfect candidate. I'm looking forward to learn something new during the process. As designers and being a slow fashion designer, I enjoy going through the development process and watch the vision unfold from seeing a pile of fabrics become a powerful statement for a niche market.
Repurposed textiles:
Men's dress pants reconstructed and upcycled to be worn for womenswear.

Remnants of fabrics purchased to utilize in the collection between darts to distinguish the application of cut and sew technique used to display sustainable technique.
Patterns used for tops of collection.
Similar patterns used for same looks, which few pieces are altered to alter the design in a unique direction. (ex. front pieces may be the same, back pieces are altered to change design.)
