Dustbins for indian Railways

Increasing consumerism and packaged products increases the waste generated by an individual which is rising at alarming rates. Railway stations  is one of the places where a large amount of people come to travel, more the people more the waste generated. The final concept involves three dustbins for separate tasks namely wet waste, dry waste and plastic bottles to which a plant pot is attached at its center. The plant pot beautifies the space, encourages people to be interactive by pouring leftover water while disposing and makes it more approachable than regular dustbins.During the research, it was convinced that plastic bottles are being consumed on a regular basis by the passengers, and is also a high demand for rag pickers and recycling companies.
Brief- To understand the current problems and challenges faced by people while disposing and segregating waste in railway stations

Below are some pictures of waste treating plants, railway stations and scrap dealers.

After visiting a number of waste treating plants, railway stations  and conducting surveys of passengers, railway authorities, shopkeepers, waste collectors, rag pickers and scrap dealers it was aware that change should be brought from the source
REDEFINED BRIEF- To design a dustbin for railway-stations that helps people to segregate waste while disposing

DESIGN CRITERIA

-VISIBILITY                       -PROPER INDICATION                 -EASE OF ACCESS                     -APPROACHABLE                        -INTERACTIVE                 -ENCOURAGING

IDEA GENERATION AND BRAINSTORMING

The next challenge was crushing a plastic bottle, since crushed bottles help the rag pickers, scrap dealers and recycling companies to transport it to the desired location more efficiently due to decrease in its volume. A motorized crusher would increase parts, maintenance and cost thus a number of human-powered mechanisms were prototyped and tested.

PROTOTYPES

The above video demonstrates the working of the initial prototype of the selected mechanism. In the actual product the user will have to press the pedal once and not multiple times as shown in the video

SKETCHES

The final form is inspired from how Indians greet one another
"Namaste"
