Larzish
Larzish, an Urdu word which roughly means "quiver", is a mini project that I had to do at the end of my course - 'historical and contextual studies in visual communication'. We had to summarize our outlooks and learnings in a set of postcards. I decided to take personalities at the intersection of art, design and culture where a certain history was/is created around the individual. These people have a deep influence on me one way or the other.
I took a two pronged approach in my execution phase - the first was to research up the individuals to try and truly understand what they believed in during their lifetime and to compress those beliefs and experiences into a few lines of written poetry. I was contemplating writing in Urdu but translating the exact words is not possible for some essence of the language is left out of it altogether. Hence I decided to stay with English and only use certain instances of Urdu where I felt I could not find a better substitute.
The second was to construct unique symbols around each of these individuals using only the basic forms of graphic design and art.ie. the square, circle and triangle. Thus both the symbol and the words are deeply connected in my personal portrayal of the individual figures and their lived/living experiences.

Disclaimer - Most of the personalities in this project are men. Why there are not many women is mainly due to my ignorance in their various fields of achievement. I realized my error after I finished the project and hence I decided to try and make a list of personalities that are women, and people of different sex categories, in various creative fields such as cinema, theatre, graphic design, literature and music (possibly within an Indian sub-context). What future form this will take of I am unaware of currently, but my I'll keep the research ready for it to materialize.
