Imbilico – Book Catalogue

Editorial

Imbilico book tells the story behind the work of Gian Luca Bianco.

The book was designed on the occasion of his participation to the 24th edition of the Armory Show, New York. Bianco's artistic production starts as a consequence to a photo-reportage shot in the areas of the earthquake, which heavily hit the centre of Italy in 2016. Those images of destruction represent the starting point for a reflection on the concept of 'Imbilico’, about rebuilding / transforming through collage technique. Published in two languages (Italian and English), the book starts with a photographic story of the journey to the earthquake zones. Those pictures were the original shot that Gian Luca will have later decided to manipulate for his experiments. The works of the artist exhibited in Italy and abroad are displayed through stories of visuals and texts about the installations. The last part of the book, instead, collects all the production of collage and the related prints divided into different supports (Fabriano paper, tissue, acetate, sudarium, lightbox). Imbilico represents an opportunity to read back the relationship between man and nature, the rules that determine this precarious balance that often goes beyond our control. It is an evolving project that changes shape, both in the meanings and the type of research.

'My favorite medium is the camera, which allows to document and put together known and unknown pieces, proceeding on a thin line that separates temporal and spatial dimensions, knowledge and ignorance'. G. L. Bianco
