Animal Farm - George Orwell
Penguin Student Design Award Adult Fiction
Designing a book cover for George Orwell's Animal Farm, I was drawn to ideas of hierarchy, corruption and manipulation. I chose to visualise this using a house of cards - reflecting upon the social structure of the farm animals of Animal Farm but also commenting upon its stability. The pigs may sit high above the other animals, but too much weight and the cards will topple and fall.
I used an expressive, hand-wrriten, scrawled typography for the title and pull-quote on the back cover as a hint towards the sense of primitiveness and aggression within the book, but also to contrast against the light, friendliness of the Archer typeface.
