The Brief
Mental Snapp is a mental health tracking app with the belief that mental health management is a skill that everyone can harness with practice. In a design team of 3, we worked with the client to envision and create a solution that could help drive and improve user engagement and retention.
Our Approach

We began the two week design sprint with some formative research assessing the competitor landscape and identifying the market position of our client, as well as conducting 1 on 1 user interviews with both current and potential users. We adopted a qualitative approach, set out to understand the context in which Mental Snapp’s users use the product, as well as their relationship with their own mental wellbeing, their habits in mood tracking, and we also explored the theme of emotional awareness.
Our research revealed that there were 3 main pain points for users in their journey of managing their own mental wellbeing.

i) Mental health management is a very intimate and personal experience, users describe their mental state in words and ways that are personal to themselves, when asked to be specific about their feelings, users found it hard to be specific or choose the right word that accurately describes how they feel.

ii) Users expressed the time and effort required to start actively managing ones mental wellbeing is a difficult to muster. Users who are in vulnerable states may find it difficult to stay in a strict routine for a long period of time, and falling out of the routine will devalue the process of doing so. Users also have expressed that with traditional methods, it is difficult to accurately convey how they feel, and often it only tells them information they already know.

iii) From our research, time was a recurring major challenge for users. Even with users who are habitually managing their mental wellbeing, there is a need to set aside specific time slots during their day, and it can sometimes be cause stress. For users who are more spontaneous, the may recognise the need to manage, but traditional means of managing such as meditation/mindfulness/ mood journals are too time consuming.
We designed a simple and intuitive way for Mental Snapp users to input their data, and in return they will receive valuable and personalised insights, gain better understanding of their patterns and triggers for mood fluctuation, which could help them make an informed and actionable decision.
The Outcome

The redesign methods of input and feedback could simultaneously achieve better engagement and retention by creating a habit forming experience. The solution also enables Mental Snapp users to better manage their mental wellbeing.

From presenting and discussing our solution with CEO of Mental Snapp, she expressed her enthusiasm and interests in our research and solution, and spoke of the possibility of implementing elements of our design in future design of the product.
