The Etruscan town of Cortona is developed in the back of a hill about 600 meters above sea level and is enclosed within a wall. Characterized by narrow medieval and cobbled streets, which climb and wind through ancient buildings in a succession of ups and downs, it has small urban spaces
characterized by hard stone pavings. The only exception is represented by Via Nazionale (Ruga Piana), the only flat street, core of the urban life of the village, going from the historical center through the gardens of the "Parterre", a one kilometer long green path without formal conclusion.

The design idea stems from these considerations going to overturn the current conformation of the "Parterre" system, a legacy of the ‘900 conceived as a green corridor where to have a walk, making it a resting space, where to stay. The first operation regards the redesign of the openair theater near piazza Garibaldi, becoming a temporary event platform, with a fixed "strong" base and a movable scenery. Along the green kilometer, rest areas have been conceived as open-air rooms, with seats from which it is possible to observe glimpses of the unique Valdichiana landscape on which Cortona overlooks. Each room is characterized by the presence of different tree species that bind to those currently present along the path, enhancing the green character of the "Parterre". The route ends in a green field guiding over a cantilevered walkway, a light element made of corten steel framing the layout of an ancient medieval path and conceived as a belvedere, a frame that fixes the surrounding area and looks towards lake Trasimeno.
