EXHIBITION - L’histoire continue / the story continues
Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père

The Empress of Ireland today rests at the bottom of the St.Lawrence, 13 kilometres northeast of the museum, having collided with the collier Storstad on the morning of May 29, 1914. With 1012 casualties, this sinking remains the worst maritime tragedy in Canadian history.

The wreck tells the story of both a terrible tragedy and also the golden age of the transatlantic liner in the early 20th-century - a story that comes to life through personal accounts and objects recovered from the depths. Over 100 years later, evidence of the sinking continues to turn up both on land and on the riverbed.
