The use of Hakka language in Malaysia is declining because it can put one at disadvantage or make one the target of discrimination. Besides, Hakkas are in the minority. Because of this, there are some people who do not admit they are Hakka because they are afraid of being bullied by other dominant Chinese dialect group.
Mandarin became the main language used in Chinese schools, diligent students' time most often spent working on Mandarin, causing less time to communicate in their mother tongue, Hakka, yet most people think learning English is more useful than Hakka. Hence, this typography project aims to encourage the use of Hakka language among Hakkas and fellow Malaysians.
This project features the main three most common conversation when people meets people: 'how are you?', 'nice to know you' and 'had you eaten?'.
As a typography project, the type was designed and blended in with the illustrations to form a stronger and harmonious situation for people to understand and learn the language of Hakka more easily.
The choice of illustration was inspired by the aim of this project, which is to boost the use of Hakka language and educating the public a new language. Craft and arrangement of illustrations and typography are more round-edged and fluid proportions for friendlier approach. Vibrant colours were also used to grab attention at first sight.
A language booklet that teaches Hakka language of different levels is available and it is suitable for people of all races.
