Photoshoot in Harstad, Norway

Harstad is a city all the way up North in Norway, above the polar circle. In 1990 my great grand father’s expedition ship (Belgica) was rediscovered there, located by divers in a fjord at 22 meters depth.  In 2008, I traveled to Harstad with a documentary team from Discovery and a team of divers. This is when I saw the ship for the first time in real life.

Totally unrelated to this event, in 2016 I was asked to teach a private workshop about photorealism in Harstad. I ended up literally overlooking the bay where we went diving for Belgica several years earlier. The pictures below are just a few impressions from my visit. The polar winter had just passed and the sun was visible for a few hours per day, very low on the horizon (more like a continuous sunrise - sunset). What an amazing place to be.The ship in the lower left corner of the first picture is called 'Anna Rogde'. She was our diving platform in 2008 and Harstad is her home port.
