Laminated Plywood Chair 2018

1.5mm laminated birch plywood with graphite infused cast epoxy resin feature, oil finish.

The foundations to the design were moulded around the resources available to me, ruling out specialist manufacturing techniques commonly used in furniture making. Evolving from a cast bronze prototype chair developed during my university degree the concept was of a sculptural nature, associated with sleek and organic forms. Laminating became the obvious solution to creating curved components from standard merchant materials that could piece together forming an elegant, sophisticated and original design. Created by hand using basic power tools in a workshop environment that was my dining room the six parts were laminated, shaped and pieced together.

The feature winged profile is designed to fit the muscular contours of the back whist the curved lumbar supports posture to create a comfortable seated experience. The large seat is dished to centre the user over the three legs, ideal for uneven floors and ensuring good stability.
