Working on those beautiful paintings was a real pleasure despite being also a real challenge because Caravaggio is perfect under every aspect and this makes his painting highly untouchable.
We needed to find a good balance between the painting and the vfx without loosing the quality and the impact of the emotions represented so we came up with this effect combining repainted depth and normals in order to simulate the light inside the paintings in a way that once passed the image will come back to its original form leaving the painting as it was before, just like a fake 3d wipe of light.
