For this project I drew my sketches as a basic representation of what I wanted the end result to look like. This is just the beginning but I wanted to visualize the end result and how these designs would look on mugs and shirts. The first two pictures are my initial thumbnail sketches. I focused on the areas of Virginia, Indians, growth, and relay. 

The second picture is my work in progress once I digitized my drawings. The client specified that the design be all black since they were going on a mug so I wanted to keep the design simple yet powerful. I chose my 5 best designs that mainly focused on relays and the location of them, Virginia as I find that the most important piece of the puzzle! 

The last picture is my final designs. I did end up adding multiple designs together to create something more visually interesting (shoes in flag) as well as something with more color (black). It was a simple fix on the last two designs by filling in the location icon and the state of Virginia but made such a huge difference in how the individual designs look. 

I think overall the design problem I had was creating an image that captured all aspects of this race. My initial drawings are much more broad where as my final ones focus on only 1-2 of the areas I had focused on. My solution by using the state of Virginia outline was that people will quickly realize the history of these races by knowing it's location as with many events around the world.
