The design of a student accommodation, which was supposed to fit in a space of 18 m2, including a bathroom, living room, bedroom, kitchen, study area, laundry room, pantry and dressing room, requires a well-thought-out system. What's more, as an Investment project, it required a rational approach in terms of financial outlay.
The assumption was to provide the residents with a comfortable living space, in spite of the limited place. I mean, literally, as many square meters on which we can move freely. It meant that during learning, when we use the desk, the second table is unnecessary, and we can only trip over the bench. Likewise, during the rest, a desk only occupies place and we have to go round it. In addition, to maintain tidiness in such a small space, it is important to minimize the amount of visible objects.
A system which was designed is based on simple furniture elements, built in a plate and chest construction, equipped with basic joinery fittings.
The system assumes that each piece of furniture can be hidden or folded, thus making it possible to use the entire available space for one function at a time
In the corridor there is the space for a coherent segment containing a kitchen with a refrigerator, sink, plate and absorber. In the following modules there is a washing machine with bins for dirty underwear, a wardrobe for clothes, storage space for brooms and vacuum cleaner, as well as a bench for putting on the shoes.
From under the beds we can slide out a lifted bench with a place for books, bedding or a pouf, providing additional seats for many guests, who come for a visit, as it often happens in a student's dormitory. Future residents also had the option of choosing a second mattress as an additional equipment, which when lifted on the frame and attached to the first one, creates a bed for two people.
A dining table and desk in which we can store notes, laptop or dishes, interwoven into adjustable shelves, form the main wall installation. Despite the unification of the system, movable shelves provide its residents with the possibility of adding accessories, which give the interior the character of its owner
