Happy New Year — Year of the Dog
Another Tết (New Year) that I will be abroad. It is more than just a date, but an occasion for pilgrims and family reunions, with many Vietnamese customs are still carried out until now. Though I won't be able to be celebrate it in Vietnam, it is still a tradition that I would like to maintain even abroad.
Here is how Tết is usually celebrated in my family.

Tết ông Công ông Táo

On the 23rd of the 12th lunar month, just before Lunar New Year, the Kitchen God returns to heaven to report the activities of every household over the past year to the Jade Emperor. The Jade Emperor, emperor of the heavens, then either rewards or punishes a family based on the Kitchen God's yearly report.
