Polish Rural Landscapes @ Exchange+2.0

Heading abroad for an exchange program was an old dream that came to fruition when I went to Estonia in 2016 as an exchange student under the Erasmus+ program. At the end of «my Erasmus» I was blessed with the opportunity to stay in Estonia and I did not have a second thought about staying longer in beautiful Tartu, the country's cultural capital. Subsequently, about one year later I was given the opportunity to engage on the European Exchange program once again, and so I did. I went to study this time in WROCŁAW-POLAND mostly because of the curriculum of my masters.

This post concerns that one semester in south-western Poland in the city of Wroclaw (pronounced «vrotzlav»)(2017-2018). There I had the chance to learn further in the field of spatial data management, namely about GIS (ArcGIS).

SHAPING THE RURAL LANDSCAPE in POLAND

Official description of the Course.
Landscape Architecture - Masters Degree, 5th year.

"The subject is concerned with the contemporary approach to shaping rural landscape, as well as rural design. The lectures involve the issues related to the history of rural settlement, its changes, as well as the determinants that affect it. The classes are concerned with the development of selected villages in the context of their built-up areas, public spaces, as well as their surroundings. It is both an analysis of conditions and a design concept aimed at appropriate land management within a selected village.

The course shall present issues related to the development of rural culture in the world and in the area of Poland, as well as the history of agricultural settlement on Polish lands. Special attention is paid to spatial layouts of villages and the components of rural landscape, both historical and contemporary ones. It also presents problems associated with the formation of modern rural landscape, including suburbs. An important element of contents it will convey is the ability to identify and classify rural architecture distinguishing marks and learning about the rules and basics for rural design. There are also presented programs supporting the development of rural areas."
