Il Conformista Slides

In the film "Il Conformista", Bernardo Bertolucci illustrates the psychology of fascism in Italy through the character Marcello Clerici and his pursuit to assassinate his professor . The film analyzes this period of time in Italy through the character's involvement with the secret police, his sexual relationships, and his exposure to violence. These themes are shown through Marcello's flashbacks throughout the film. They breakup the film to signify that all events are related to each other and make up the life of Marcello, no matter how much he tries to escape from it and embrace normalcy.

Each still that I've decided to abstract is a moment in the film that I think is a key scene to the development of the story. I've emphasized on patterns and geometry to further portray Marcello's "need to conform" with recurring shapes of red that mirror violence and the subjects of violence. The compositions try to mimic the muted tones of the film as well as the space created. Finally, the layout that I've chosen to present the slides in reflect the cyclical time frame that the movie revolves around.
