Bambi in the Forest

Bambi in the Forest
by: Isabella Liberti

Describe: I made this piece for my cut paper composition. In this piece trees, bushes, and a doe can all be seen atop a gray/black background. This piece was created one layer at a time. i painted the base with dark gray acrylic paint. I then cut out trees from brown wallpaper samples and the leaves for the tree tops also with wallpaper samples. I then used double sided tape and foam core to make it stick up above the background. I then did the same thing and made a second layer of bigger trees. I then made bushes out of wallpaper samples and drew and watercolor painted a doe that went in about the center of the piece.
Analyze: The idea for this piece came to me when looking around on pintrest. i saw multiple different pieces with a woodsy theme and decided to make this piece. I was inspired to put a doe in the picture because i have always liked the movie Bambi. Hence the name, "Bambi in the Forest." Texture and space are probably the two most prominent principles/elements of design present in this composition. Texture can be found in the texture of the wallpaper and space can be seen in both positive and negative space in and between the trees, bushes, and the doe.
Interpret: I created this piece to shows the beauty and wonder in nature. I also wanted to show the depth and mystery of nature through this piece which is seen in the many layers of wallpaper and foam core. Often times we miss the beauty and depth of nature and I wanted to represent that in my piece. My hope is that those who see it will take time out of their day to truly see the beauty in nature. I hope that i was successful in this.
Judge: I hope that people take away something from this piece and see the beauty of nature in it. Overall, i think this piece was pretty successful. I really liked the texture and authentic feel that the wall paper samples gave to the piece. I also like hoe emphasis is put on the doe due to the fact that it is one of the only things not done in wallpaper. However, i wish that i would have been able to make the foam core a little bit thinner in some spots on the branches to prevent being able to see it under the wallpaper.
Artists: A master artist related to my piece is Ivan Shishkin. He was born in1832 and died in 1998 in Russia. He was know for capturing the beauty of nature in his paintings. Not only was his work related to my piece in subject but also in color scheme. His paintings consist mainly of forest greens and browns, similar to mine. a contemporary artist whose works related to my piece is Yuko Yamamoto. She is from japan and does cut paper designs. She has a whole section of pieces she has done based off of cut paper plants. This is similar to my piece in both medium and the concept of nature and plants.
