Cura-tour has been the collaborative project of British creatives Ben Mottershead and Chris Edwards. It provides a platform for creatives to link up, network and collaborate. Amidst the creative chasm, a bi-weekly zine capturing interviews with a variety of artists across the creative spectrum plays a major part in the Cura-Tour brand, delivering fresh inspiration from students and graduates across the globe.
We originally met each other through 'The Designers League' Facebook group which we also help to run. We were both very aware of the pressures and expectations young creatives, especially students, place onto themselves and after talking we decided that a platform aimed at this demographic, where people talk about their experiences, backgrounds, advice and creative spaces (a tour of their creative environment so to speak) may allow others to realise that they're not alone in their own struggles and insecurities and it's natural to feel this way.
Living within two different cities within England, we collaborated via numerous rushed Skype calls and frantic emails. The project consists of a 2 part zine, showcasing two different artists, a bespoke masthead and logotype created using a custom designed typeface & also a website design.
Project Type: Collaborative
Fields: Branding + Print Design + Advertising)
01 — Logotype development
Comprised of a fully customised geometric typeface, the logo mark's sole intent is to reflect the diversity of Cura-Tour's creative platform. Reflecting the the extensive void of subjective debate and documented artwork. Gauging a clear and memorable solution that can be used across digital and print based applications. Below are the initial stages of development as we produced our concept alongside various testing with grid systems.
02 — Animating the Logotype
Animating the logotype gave us the opportunity to explore the principles in which we built this brand on. Consequently, taking our grid system, and placing our custom logotype into a situation that showcases the inner-thinking of the creative mind. Thus, a repetition of movement in alternating segments to reflect the frequent input / output action of the design process.
03 — The Zine
Our zine was a powerful tool to document the conversation and debate we had with our featured creatives alongside the curation of their submissions. As a result, we based each zine, from across layout to visual language, off their working style alone. Embodying a distinguishable identity that preserves the integrity of their work and the recognisable brand language of Cura-Tour.
04 — Website
As an extension of our editorial product, we developed a conceptual design proposal for how our site could look and perform in the near future. In essence, we wanted something that would reflect the legibility of our zine, whilst gauging an infinitely simple user experience for both desktop and mobile browsing.
