When I was young seven of my cousins, my brother, and I would take mattresses, sleeping bags and blankets and ride them down the stair of our grandparents' house. For years every time we were all together we would do this and every time we would get in trouble for it because it would start to pull the carpet away from the stairs, but we continued to do it. This is a fond memory that I have because I remember the hours of fun we would have doing this.

I started by cutting nine circles with the largest being 2.5” and the smallest 1.0”. The nine circles represent the nine of us. They were cut, sanded and each had a circle cut into the center so a dowel rod could be put in the center to hold them together. The idea behind having it put into an oval shape was to have represent passing time because I do not recall how many years we would ride mattresses and blankets down the stairs, but I do know we did it for quite a few years. The other two visible materials were burlap and gray acrylic paint. This was to represent the feel and the look of the carpet that covered the stairs in my grandparents’ house. The burlap was first painted and then cut to fit each individual “step” and then it was attached to the balsa wood pieces with hot glue. The wood of the dowel rod was left visible to show that underneath the carpet was hard, unpadded wood.
