2 years ago, after I found out about Aaron James Draplin and his "Field Notes" I decided to create my own sketch-/notebooks during my final year at highschool. I wanted a book which would lay open once placed on the table so you could easily draw and write inside it. I decided to give the coptic stitch technique a try since, after trying to sew a book with a sewing machine, I wasn't satisfied with the look of the book. The coptic stitch technique was perfect since the book was laying flat and I didn't need a machine to bind the book. After trying cardboard covers I quickly realised that they wear off way to fast. Going to a local crafting shop I found pretty thin wood sheets which I thought would look very nice as book covers.
I was very satisfied with how the book looked and felt but the process of making it was very long. On top of that the edges of the book covers were pretty rough since I had to cut and sand them by hand. Some of my friends and family also wanted a book since they really liked it. So I had to find another way to cut the book covers. Earlier that school year we went to the "FabLab" where you can use all kinds of machines (3D Printer, CNC Milling Machine, etc.) for a little monthly subscriptions. I remembered that they also had a laser cutter which could work for cutting and even engraving my book covers.
From that point on I really gained the attraction of many more friends and family who wanted a book. After speaking with the owner of the "FabLab" he recommended me trying another wood which mostly being used for laser cutting and engraving so I gave it a shot. Those thin MDF boards looked even better when engraved and were way cheaper than the old wooden boards.
I even created an agenda for the year 2017 which also was a lot of fun! After that I did a collaboration with some friends who design and sell clothes where they designed the book cover and we made an edition of 20.
Thanks for watching!
