Project Brief : The brief calls for a design of living and working environment for a professional in the creative industry. This unit will stand amongst other such units as port of a creative belt in a conservation area in Singapore
Client : A wooden toy maker who is a migrant from Germany to Singapore. He would need a balance between living and work, at the same time being able to sustain himself and able to adapt to the new environment.

CONCEPT
Unlike other carpenter, the wooden toy maker work in his own special way; Progression backward. Given a piece of wood, they would start to subtract each of its portion from the outside (corner) to the inside (core).
APPROACH
Through the idea of outside to the inside, the approach taken is exterior to the interior. The core which would turn into the green space for the building will also organise the space to be inward looking, creating a private retreat for the client himself.

The blur boundary between the passer-by around the neighbourhood and the workshop (Left) + drying room (Right) of the toy maker. The composition of the view is further enhance by the greenery and natural sunlight which act as the backdrop.

The idea of the subtraction could be experience as one walks through the long narrow entrance walk-way. The walk-way connect the core (green space) where work and living is circling around to the outside.

The sunken plane bring the user close to the nature, as where one sit, they are on the same level as the ground. The sunken plane is an ideal place for the owner to welcome his guest / clients.

[ D ] View from the bedroom to the core
Bedroom canterlivered to the core of the house where the trees are located - ENHANCE the idea of being closed to nature. Responding to the sunpath, when the morning sun rises, the shadow of the trees act as the extension of the nature into the room, animating the whole space.
