Serbian Dinar Banknote

Looking at modern society, we can see that money itself represents value. My idea behind this assignment was to use money to communicate the true value of the region where that money will be used. I also thought about how money came to be as important as it is, and a “basic means of survival”, when on the other hand we need much different things in order to survive. Things money can’t buy. The motives I chose were strongly inspired by an old Native American proverb: “when the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten, and the last stream poisoned, you will realize that you cannot eat money”. That is how I chose two native species, that are near extinction: Picea omorika, and Tichodroma muraria. These two species would be represented on something that is continuously circulating from hand to hand and in that way reminding us of what is really important, and what we should cherish more.

Picea omorika - It was originally discovered near the village of Zaovine on the Tara Mountain in 1875, and named by the Serbian botanist Josif Pančić.

Tichodroma muraria is a small passerine bird found throughout the high mountains of Eurasia from southern Europe to central China. It is the only extant member of both the genus Tichodroma and the family Tichodromidae.
