CalArts Imagemaking Study
Imagemaking Study | CalArts | Coursera

This study is part of the Graphic Design Specialization course being offered by California Institute of Arts on Coursera. It focused on the various methods of image-making and their range of representation. Image composition rules and processes featured as an integral part of image-making. As a part of an assignment, the presented images were created and reviewed.

The Brief
The emphasis of this course is the process of creating. This process is designed to spark new ways of making images. Being a part of the graphic design course the created images intend to be in the context of graphic design. Images created invariably will carry with it connotations, associations, and expressiveness. To explore these meanings and to convey a story through the images was the ultimate goal.

The Idea
Choosing an animal as a subject I was required to explore multiple ways of representation using different image-making techniques. The range of representation was expected to influence a viewer's reading into the image. The connotation had to be subtle yet provoking. Each image had to be a different interpretation of the subject. Distinctions between the process of making and outcome of making should be clear.

The Result
I chose the tiger as my subject and used different art styles to make my collection while getting inspired by many different artists and their works. My process started with a blank paper, then an inception followed by an inspiration and finally a creation which was better than the inception. I employed pencil sketching, digital painting, water coloring, inking, and even animation to explore a strong range of representation.
OUTRUN YOUR STRIPES
A 2D Classical animation made of 18 frames running at 25fps. This was sketched and rendered in Photoshop using Timeline Animation. This represents the idea to accelerate your actions towards your goals so much that all restrictions fall behind.
ANGRY POLYGONS
A low poly image created in illustrator and composed in photoshop using a reference image. The image shows the aggression and intensity of a tiger while keeping it unreal by modeling it digitally.
DEEP IN INK (LEFT)
A sketch created by meticulous inking using Micron pens over a bond paper. A tiger moves stealthily towards its prey.

THE ADHD TIGER (RIGHT)
A digital cartoon made on Sketchbook Pro and composed in photoshop. A take on the lighter side of being highly distracted.
TRUST IN ME (LEFT)
A pencil portrait of a tiger made using a reference. The calmness as captured soothes you while the gaze pierces through.

TIGER CIRCLE (RIGHT)
An experiment with wet on wet watercolor with micron inking. The power balance is shifting while we wait for the worse.
ONCE UPON A TIME
A pastel artwork made by putting a black layer of pastel over yellow and then scratching it off using a knife. The grungy texture only accentuates the subject which is a fossilized head of a tiger.
VECTOR THE TIGER (LEFT)
A logo design made on Illustrator inspired by Machine Design. This is created using just one shape that is a rounded edge rectangle.

WHAT DO YOU SEE? (CENTER)
A piece of pop art inspired by Rorschach Test morphing the map of India into the face of a roaring tiger composed on Photoshop.

PUSH TO REVEAL (RIGHT)
This is a piece of paper art where an image of a tiger is cut out on the front of a paper pocket. A second paper slides into the pocket to reveal the image.
