Let Letters Lead Type Experiments with Printing Methods

Let Letters Lead is a project that I started in Vienna in 2012, when I was an exchange student in Angewandte in the Printing Graphic department.

With all kinds of traditional printing methods (woodblock printing, screenprinting, etching) I created typographic illustrations for English words. For each letter in the alphabet, I chose an adjective with a strong and depictable atmosphere. After printing the word, I used the first letters to create a personal display font. Every letter is different in style and form, but hopefully all of them will be connected with the idea behind. All af them are richly decorated, they have a strong texture and a "personality". From the extra letters of the words alternatives can be chosen for the display alphabet.

There are alternatives for every letter.

Aloof - digital print.

Beaming - woodcutting.

Celestial - etching and china collage. The pink lines are on a different layer of very thin paper that were pressed on top of the print by the printing machine.

I found old and already used copper plates and recycled them. The old scrathes created a strange and unforseeable surface for the prints

Fibrous - etching.

Illuminated - woodcutting. Printed with two woodblocks.

When the woodblocks were misplaced, they altered the atmosphere of the prints.

Noble - etching. For this picture too, I recycled an old and already used copper plate. The old scrathes created a strange and unforseeable surface.

Raspy - woodcutting.

Slender - screen printing.

Watery - etching.

With the "china collage" technique I could create an extra layer on top of the etching while printing. So every print came out different.

Let Letters Lead project is not finished yet - out of the 26 letters I have completed only 10.
