Specialist brief - Braille Co.

For this we were required to select any brand/service/product/cause and design a campaign in our various fields. The campaign needs to fully resolve a solution to the design problem we have identified. The choice of campaign needs to lend itself to several linked extension possibilities and must have some rational and real world application.

The problem I identified is that there is a communication barrier between blind and sighted people. Blind people don't have equal opportunities and many everyday issues inhibit their ability to fully and equally participate in society. My solution is to educate society on braille and to include it into everyday life.

I decided to design and create 4 pieces in my campaign - packaging, an app, a booklet and the organisation's corporate identity.

The organisation I created is called Braille Co. Braille Co. fights to eliminate the communication barrier between blind and sighted people. Their key purpose is to allow the blind to fully and equally participate in society. Their aim is to educate society on braille and to include it into everyday life.

The packaging I designed caters to the blind as it only has braille visible and is very tactile. The name of the product is written in braille on the front of the packaging. The organisation's logo is placed on the sides using white vinyl stickers. Other exposed areas are embossed with braille to add to the tactility. If sighted people wish to know what the product is they can use the app I designed to scan the braille on the product and it will translate it for you. The app provides users with an option of a voice-activated or self-read app. People with low or poor vision can use the self-read option as it provides you with a magnifying glass to magnify anything on the screen. The voice-activated option works like Siri on Apple devices - you tell it what to do using your voice. The app provides users with information on braille and has a few quizzes for you to learn and test your knowledge of braille. The profile page provides users with a progress report on their learning and knowledge of braille.

The booklet I designed serves as a learning guide to braille. It provides users with information on braille, the braille alphabet, the history of braille, how to read braille and the organisation itself. It contains each letter of the alphabet with its braille counterpart. This way users can learn how to identify each letter. The corporate identity I designed makes use of embossed braille and vinyl stickers. I designed a business card, letterhead, comp slip and envelope. The business card has a multipurpose - it is in the shape of a signature guide that most blind people use when signing documents etc.
