Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (1990) defines ‘flow’ as a mental state of being, wherein the creative is so fully immersed in a task that there are no distractions from his/her outside surroundings as his/her mind is fully attuned to the act of creating (Csikszentmihalyi 1990). Flow is therefore a desired condition for the creative to fully
benefit from the creative process.

If one is in a flow state, the brain goes into a state of transient hypofrontality, wherein the brain deactivates the sense of self, this becomes a beneficial condition to creativity and the creative process as it allows the brain to shut off its fears and its inner self critic to allow for risk taking, experimentation, and an increase in creativity.
