Things Can Get Better: Personal Branding & Identity

I believe that design can change the world. Design is everything. I see it everywhere I go, from the cracks in the sidewalk to the way our government works. I don't think there are any boundaries to what we can do with design. This is why my portfolio is centered around the idea that Things Can Get Better. I know that as a designer, I will make things better. I also wanted my portfolio to serve as a reminder to Do Something Good. I wanted the viewer to really feel that if they do something good, things will get better.

When considering branding myself, and my identity, I took a hard look at who I really am and what I stand for. I didn't want my portfolio to just be a collection of my work because I stand for so much more than that. I am lucky to have the ability to see the world through a designer's eye, and I am extremely grateful for all that I have learned. I wanted these things to come off in my portfolio. So, when branding myself, I focused more on who I am and what I want to do in my career, rather than what I have done and where I have been.

I designed two sections for my print portfolio, one focusing on my work, and one focusing on my self and my passion surrounding design. I also created a PDF of my portfolio, which could be sent through e-mail and serves as a quicker look at what I've done and what I'm interested in. I am also a trained professional photographer, and this personal portfolio really showcases some of my photography.

When beginning to work with the look and feel of my brand and identity, I considered my own personal visual style. I wanted to stay true to what I have always been driven to as a viewer and try to stay away from trends and "right now" design elements, and I also wanted it to feel personal. I hope this helps the viewer feel more connected to me.

My resumé is designed horizontally (in landscape). This was done in an effort to make my resumé more interesting as well as to provide more negative space for the eye to rest. These are printed on Mohawk Environmental paper.

My business cards are printed on brown kraft paper. They are blue ribbons with my contact information, and stamped on the back is the phrase, "things can get better," in my own handwriting.

In a small, key envelope, I have designed and illustrated a step-by-step instruction for tying a Bowline on a Bight Knot, which specifically resembles the classic "do not forget" or reminder knot. Inside this envelope is a reminder to Do Something Good and a small piece of waxed hemp, for the user to learn to tie this knot. This take-away has been designed in an effort to really make the viewer remember to Do Something Good and direct them to my website.
