Anda Tanaka, Editorial Spread

Choosing content that expresses a personal interest or area of expertise, I  was to design one four–page (two spreads) feature story. Original or acquired photography or illustration as well as headline, byline, text, folios, captions were required, and additional type treatments were encouraged.

Anda Tanaka, local printmaker and painter, was my chosen subject for my editorial feature. Her art is a masterful display deeply immersed in rhythm, structure, geometry, and landscape. Playful angles paired with soft circles characterize both her art and her personality. To capture her aesthetic and personality, I designed all the type for the headline utilizing geometric lines, angles, and circles.  Original and eye-catching, it also evoked a sense of landscape and horizon so prominent in her work. I wrote all copy for the article to tell her story as comprehensively as possible.  To capture the reader’s attention I chose a stunning painting to span the gutter for the opening spread. Highlighted text was paired with colors found in her paintings.

My creation of the title What Surfaces, with its dual meaning, along with my illustrative original title font that evoked Anda’s personality, her work, and her inspiration was my abbreviated and cryptic way of telling a much bigger and quite compelling story of an  artist whose challenges and triumphs are realized in her art.
