ISTD: A Parisian Mystery of typography and signage

BRIEF

Design a typographic work that explores the subjects of fads and trends by drawing reference from different eras, societies, social groups, generations etc.

STRATEGY

Just as Paris is iconic and beautiful it's also mysterious. A simple sign with script typography would not look as elegant in any other place as it does in Paris. Neon signs, contrary to popular belief, originated in Paris and not Las Vegas. The very first neon signs were limited to colour and were mainly inspired by French script. Paris is so mysterious because every design aspect of this city is aesthetically pleasing.

CONCEPT

This concept is focused on neon signs as a fad, in Paris in the 1900's. Trying to solve the mystery that is Paris and displaying how the different elements of neon signs relate to the eclectic style and feel Paris. The different aspects of the neon are the script typefaces, the building of the signs and the colours of the neon in the 1900's in Paris.

EXECUTION

Using digital rendering signs in accordance to research about the script, build and colours of neon, posters feature as the main typographic work to promote the fad of Neon in Paris in 1910.  A poster was also created to further enhance the fa and craft of Neon signage in a similar style to the signs in the 1900’s.
