Conspiracy theories of various kinds have been part of human culture for centuries. The struggle against conspiracies, whether real or imagined, has become a standard model in literary fiction, while the belief in actual conspiracies is a type of social phenomenon. Conspiracy theories serve a number of functions. In some cases, conspiracy theories can be used to express suspicion and anger toward a dominant social group or to express frustration with perceived powerlessness within society. Conspiracy theories have been used by those in power to justify the persecution of targeted groups.
