The City Scape And Black Robots Prints, Autumn/Fall 2008
Yak Pak was a New York-based bag company that created fashionable, innovative, high quality backpacks, messenger bags and other related products. The bag line was known for its fun, carefree and colorful prints. I was asked to developed 2 print concepts for Yak Pak Fall 2008. The first preview was presented at Pool Trade Show in Las Vegas. The company wanted something urban, modern and unisex. Our goal was to develop surface print patterns that could be translated on various products as well as used for company's website and other related print collateral materials.
The idea of City Scape print was initiated after a discussion on the iconic Manhattan skyscrape. I was talking with Yak Pak production teams about how much I loved to look at the New York city when passing through Brooklyn Bridge and had never gotten tired of the view. It clicked to me that the New York Skyline was the perfect inspiration for a print that could stand the test of time. I further developed the visual idea by making several photo collages, combining known New York attractions, and tested the general visual layout before diving into the illustration. If you look closely at the finished print below, you will clearly see both directly and indirect references to parts of Chinatown, Brooklyn/Manhattan bridge, Lower East Side, infamous New York subway station and map, as well as The City Hall. There were even motifs taken from Coney Island and its Deno's Wonder Wheel. But we took them off the print during the editing process to avoid a "too literate" interpretation. The print was very successful and made available for majority of Yak Pak bag products. The print was also used as the front page illustration for the company website, and was brought back many seasons as company's best seller.
