'Know Your Banknote' – Exhibit Installation (2016)

Exhibition at the "A. Plamadeala" Art College in Chisinau, Moldova.
Know Your Banknote, 2016
Installation

"Know Your Banknote" is an installation meant to redefine the Moldovan currency and speak up about the current social and political situation in the country. It was inspired from the laundering of 1 billion dollars from the Moldovan banks in 2014, as well as the orthodox church's involvement in the presidential election from late October 2016.

Exhibition at the "A. Plamadeala" Art College in Chisinau, Moldova.
In 2016, during my first official year of enrollment at the art academy, even at 2.190,8 km away, I’ve been following the news very thoroughly. The outrageous “theft of the century” (of which Vlad Plahotniuc “the Dictator” is the main beneficiary), and all the other pre/post-electoral political wrongdoings as well as my inability to be on the spot and take action, made my heart boil. One of the projects I worked on was an installation where I redesigned every element of the Moldovan currency banknote based on the momentary political situation in my home country, “laundered” the money, and hung it to dry. "Know Your Banknote" was an installation meant to redefine the Moldovan currency and speak up about the current social and political situation in the country. The final outcome was part of an exhibition that took place in my hometown on 22-29 November 2017, which I was not able to attend. From a distance, I gave the necessary instructions of the installation to a couple of acquaintances that were based in Moldova and involved in the organisation of the exhibition. My work was, during and after the exhibition (which lasted for 7 days), widely discussed on social media – thus tackling my work’s political message among young people who attended the event.
