X-PAND/ Portable, foam extruding, quadcopter 3D printer

Quadcopters, highly agile and precise given the right programming, we chose this as our vehicle for delivering material because it has no restricions in the normal axis’ of printing.

The only obstacle for the quadcopter was the material, how do you print a chair for example without carrying around a chairs worth of material? Simple cans of expanding foam were the answer, cheap, bio-degradable and light.

The function of this project has a certain duality. We saw it initially as for personal use as a new type of graffiti scuplutre. But looking to the future, and advances in the chemical makeup of the material and precision of quadcopters we can see an application in site specific printing for the building industry.
Each member of the team contributed a lot to the whole project but in particular I worked on the can mount and extruded. It was modelled in Solidworks first then 3D printed out and fixed to the quadcopter
