Penrose CDB - Visual Identity

Penrose CDB develops brand strategy and interactive design systems with a focus on NGO's, educational institutions and political activism. We identify and articulate core values and create innovative ways to express them in a sustainable manner.
Inspiration
The strategy behindPenrose CDB was to link design, art, science and politics in subtle andnon-intrusive way. After considerable research it was decided on the name andthe concept of Penrose. A Penrose, is a non-periodic tiling generated by anaperiodic set of prototiles. The aperiodicity of the Penrose prototiles impliesthat a shifted copy of a Penrose tiling will never match the initialtessellation, thus constantly reinventing new patterns.

The pattern system, invented by English mathematical physicist and philosopher Sir Roger Penrose, has resonance in nature and science. The Penrose system has a great importancein the understanding of the universe through its link to quantum gravity.

The link to natureis done through the predominant importance of Phi. Phi Φ is considered the golden ratio for design in the naturalworld, its presence can be found from the Nautilus Shell, Ram's horns, the faceof a Sunflower, our DNA, and the shape of the Milky Way.

Aperiodictessellation patterns are found all over the art world, but particularlyinspiring to the concept, due to its political resonance and universal beauty, are early Moorish and Islamic architecture – the patterns in the AlhambraMosque in Granada Spain and the Tomb of Hafez in modern Iran were particularlyevocative for the process. As well the project draws inspiration from the works of UrsSchmid and Dutch artist M. C. Escher.

Wordmark
The typography used for the Wordmark is Geomancy by Natasha Fernandez, which has its roots in French and American Art Deco. The letter had been linked to symbolize unity and continuity.
