Shizen - Teak Wood bench

‘Shizen’ is a bench that adapts itself to both, interior and exterior environments. Its design is inspired by the techniques of Japanese Woodworking. The word ‘Shizen’ in Japanese translates to ‘Nature’ in English.

Dimensions - 1200L X 420B X 460H mm
Material - Ghana Teak Wood, Rosewood
Treatment - Olive Oil
Team - Sharyu Ambadkar, Sneha Arvind

The edges of the seat were burnt using a blow torch and a stiff brush was used to scrape out grains from the top layer. This process, ‘Shou Sugi Ban’ is an age-old Japanese technique of burning wood to preserve it. In turn, it also gives the furniture a raw and natural feel.
Three dowels hold the tie member to the seat and a tenon mortise joint fastens the legs to the tie member. In addition, the two parts of the seat are held together with three butterfly joints.
