Mind's Eye

Brief- Using your artistic practice as an anchor, create a collection of soft sculptures.

This project was undertaken as part of a Soft Sculpture course at Srishti Institute of Art Design and Technology. It aims to encapsulate the power of ‘imagination’ and create forms that come alive in the mind’s eye. It emphasizes on making ‘drawing’ a 3-dimensional experience, introducing tactility through the technique of embroidery. As s child, I remember looking at stains on walls and creating my own forms in my mind, just like cloud watching, this habit has remained with me. In this project, I wanted to take the practice forward and 'draw' out what my mind saw.
One collection of characters emerge from the mind’s response to stimulus, a psychological
phenomena called Pareidolia (stains on walls, tile designs, etc.) and the other set emerges from my childhood memories
.

The video below shows the process of how my character emerge from the stains on walls.

Sketches of forms inspired by organic stains collected from different places
Translating on to fabric

While creating the soft sculptures, I wanted to retain the style of my illustrations. I kept the focus on 'lines', playing with the thickness by varying the number of threads I used. To create the lines, I used a combination of the stem stitch, running stitch and the Katha stitch.
