Petiol grater, 2015

The design of the grater is based primarily on the Plantain plant's 'petiol', the transition between the leaf and its stem. This formal approach relates directly to the grater's intended use: to make 'alcapurrias', a traditional Puerto Rican fritter food. Since the 'alcapurrias' are traditionally made by taking a special batter, spreading, filling and covering it with a plantain leaf, the object's form works similar to the leaf of the plant while also providing a space for capturing and shaping the grated ingredients that are used to make it.
