Custom typeface relating to the era of the novel.
With this project I researched the recurring themes of the plot and the symbolisms it attempts to portray to the reader. The main symbolisms that I came across were the cynicism and corruption of 1930s American society.

The oil droplet contains all the imagery inside which allows for a lot of white space, and represents the corrupted and isolated city of Los Angeles, where newspapers lie and cops can be bought. This immorality is due to 1930s society, in the time of the great depression and crime was everywhere.

The Typeface was created by inspiring art deco designs, as this would reflect the novels era. A texture depicting an oil surface further translates gangsters sinning within the city, killing, blackmailing, and gambling.
A subtle texture within the droplet shows the rain pouring down on top of skyscrapers. This is a reference towards the novel as the author uses weather as an insight to the modd of the scene. Pervading rain is mostly always apparent in the novel and relates back to the current state in which Los Angeles is in.
