Depression / Poster Series

According to World Health Organization (WHO), it is estimated that 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression.

Popular tradition has it that emotions live in the heart. Science, on the other hand, tracks the location of your emotions to the brain. Certain areas of the brain help regulate mood. Researchers believe that — more important than levels of certain brain chemicals — nerve cell connections, nerve cell growth, and the functioning of nerve circuits have a major impact on depression.

Fortunately, depression can surely be controlled and cured when seeing a specialist. Each patient is supposed to be treated as an individual; a new theory should be generated for each person, instead of fitting the person to some already existing idea.

The main problem is not that depression is present in our society – it is a medical illness, we can not stop that from happening nor is my goal with this project to do that. What I want to do is to educate people that it is something that shouldn’t be hidden and it should be talked about. That way depressed people would find it easier to go and see a specialist and I want to encourage others to learn how to treat depressed people and how to stop it from leading to suicide. This is why I decided to do a line of posters that would make people aware and to educate them about this topic. The style I decided to use is Swiss Design.

The reason why I chose Swiss Design as the style for my posters is because when brainstorming for solutions, one of the first words that came to my mind was the world MEDICAL – depression is a medical condition, it is not a weak character – and that is what I want people to understand better. When the society becomes less judgmental and more supportive, it will be a better chance for the percentage of depressed people to commit suicide to decrease (because they will be encouraged to try to recover).

Medication package design is frequently following the Swiss design system and this is why I find it the most suitable for the visuals I created.
