Many designers and architect follow this rule, understanding the essence of the objects, materials, forms. Afterwards, "Reduction" that reduce unnecessary parts. Clean, Simple and Good design.
"Why such a simple minimal object makes it a good design?"
I think it is all about "detail". More is less, more? more details. I believe combination of lots of tiny details, understanding essence of materials, forms, question, solution, the relationship between object and human (or animal, or environment), they form good design with minimal style.
