Week Seven - Light and Scale

WEEK SEVEN - LIGHT AND SCALE

For this week's images I manipulated elements of light and scale both as seperate elements and in the way they relate to one another. All of the images shown were taken at Meagan Streader's installation, The Weight of Light.

IMAGE ONE - IN FRAME

TECHNIQUE

Camera: IPhone 7
Manipulated in VSCO

PROCESS

I took this photograph simply when the moment presented itself. I used my phone camera and adjusted the focus, zoom and exposure until I was happy with how it looked. I then brought the image into VSCO and adjusted the levels for this outcome.

REASONING

I liked how the installation lights frame the group of people standing. The lamp behind backlights them to create beautiful silhouettes and and an overall warmth to the image.

REFLECTION

I love this photograph, I think the colours and lighting and overall composition come together really nicely.

IMAGE TWO - IN THE SHADOWS

TECHNIQUE

Camera: IPhone 7
Manipulated in VSCO

PROCESS

I took this photograph when I noticed my shadow between the zones of light. I used my phone camera and adjusted the focus, zoom and exposure until I was happy with how it looked. I then brought the image into VSCO and adjusted the levels for this outcome.

REASONING

I was surprised to find my shadow in this very dark space so I seized the opportunity to capture this kind of warped sense of scale and it's relationship with light.

REFLECTION

I quite like this image, it appears eery. The blue tones make it appear futuristic which I think is quite interesting. I like how you can see the exisiting sits

IMAGE THREE - GHOSTLY

TECHNIQUE

Camera: IPhone 7
Manipulated in VSCO

PROCESS

I took this photograph from the one point of the space where there was light coming in so I could make sure Hayley was seen. I used my phone camera and adjusted the focus, zoom and exposure until I was happy with how it looked. I directed Hayley to walk through the space to create this blurred effect. I then brought the image into VSCO and adjusted the levels for this outcome.

REASONING

I noticed in a lot of my photos that the focus and shutter speed on my phone's camera were nowhere near as advanced as that on the Canon. I used this to my advantage to create this contrast between the gentle movement of the human body in the foreground and the stark, harsh lines of light in the backgrouns

REFLECTION

I love this photograph! The shadow of Hayley on the back wall is so still while her actual body is so unclear. It creates a kind of eery yet beautiful effect. I think the B&W effect really brings out the shapes in the installation.

IMAGE FOUR - BELOW

TECHNIQUE

Camera: IPhone 7
Manipulated in VSCO

PROCESS

I took this photograph with my camera facing the ground when I noticed someone coming towards me.

REASONING

I wanted to highlight how from every angle within the dark areas of the space, things look much the same. You could be hanging upside down or looking sideways, and still similar shapes and forms can be found. The only thing that makes this image's orientation clear are the little legs towards the back. I believe this comments on how humans are such a significant, if not crucial part, of the spaces they inhabit.

REFLECTION

I like this photograph a lot. It is so lovely in it's simplicity.

IMAGE FIVE - SWAY

TECHNIQUE

Camera: Canon EOS 550D
ISO: 200
F/stop: 35.00mm
Shutter speed: 1/4500

In all honesty, this picture was a big happy accident. I was trying to adjust the camera's settings to capture the light in the way I had hoped, but as I was taking this photograph the battery died so I used my phone. I stumbled upon this photograph at a later date and was pleasantly surprised. I just think it's cool! I love how much energy it conveys and the subtle orange glow peering through the back.
