Veneer Lamp - The "Pineapple-Mummy"

Made in Dec 2015, the "Pineapple - Mummy Lamp" was a workshop-base project of me & 2 last year students: Nguyen Dinh Van, Do Thi Thu Trinh. This project is purely to inspire and keep us creative.

Initial idea for this was just "I want to make something out from Veneer". I ask other students whether they want to make something for sometime. After a short brainstoming session, we decided to make lamps.

In the end, there were 2 lamps. The "Pinapple-Mummy" was from my concept.
Originally I wanted to create something lively and really had fun with it. At the same time, the veneer's characteristic was not fully explored as we planned to have a nice shape first.

Consequently, lots of sketches came out with 2 characteristics kept: A Soft look with curve & A Frame to stand.
Then an interesting idea came out. What I intended to draw is veneer wrapping around a frame. It turned to be a mummy shape. I took this to make a prototype.

TDTU's Industrial Design Workshop was a big place with many students who are always being there to make stuffs. Our making time was from 6pm - 9pm and it run through 3 weeks. We work a bit day by day. First is to familiarize with the materials - cut them in to long stripes, heat them up or cool them down to test.

My lamp idea used long stripe of veneer to wrap whereas Trinh's lamp use rolled up venner. In either case, we needed to wet the venner and then test its limit of breaking or elasticity. Van helped two of us in constructing the frames as he was excellent in welding and experienced.
Mine was using iron as frame.
Trinh's lamp was using PVC as frame.
Light testing in the dark outside our workshop. Trinh's lamp was supposed to be hanged for better view.
