RECORD NEWSPAPER

The Record is a famous newspaper in Portugal, which claims to be the leading sports newspaper in the country with a daily circulation of about 50,000 copies. Although it covers most sports, football is its focal point, thus reflecting the portuguese football hegemony, where other sports are often neglected by both the government and the media.

Our objective in this project was to redesign the newspaper, not for people who like football, but mostly for those who like to read about it. Because sports is based on competition, we decided that our main concept and inspiration for the new design would be exactly that: competition. As most newspapers in Portugal, it's a tabloid, so we decided to change it to a more vertical format, resembling those of British broadsheets. The verticality of the format is in competition with the horizontal thick black lines used to define each article as well as the header and the footer of the page.

Typography is also used with accents of contrast. While the titles are presented in a bold, expanded font, the subtitles are composed with a much more condensed one. However, the body displays a classic, delicate font that is easy to read. The monochromatic theme is meant to separate the newspaper from any association to a particular sports team, something that the original paper seems to be accused of failing at.
