Iskandar Jalil: Provenance

Iskandar Jalil: Provenance
Rebranding project, 2017

Iskandar Jalil is a leading Singapore ceramicist who was awarded the Cultural Medallion for Visual Arts in 1988. Our task was to rebrand the existing promotional materials for Kembara Tanah Liat (Clay Travels) exhibition at The National Gallery Singapore. His works are often inspired from his travels. To develop his pottery, he would travel and record observations with notes and sketches.

Through Iskandar's humility and deep-rooted personality, the exhibition was then renamed as Provenance using an earthy and natural colour palette. Quotes from his life philosophies were included as part of the materials to serve as an inspiration to the audience reading it. The posters can either work as a stand-alone or a trio when placed side by side in the following order of colour—brick, salmon and blue where they represent mud (origin), the making on wheel (process) and completed pottery (finishing) respectively. The idea behind is to highlight the importance of where and why something is made.
