Animal Farm Currency

As a creative collaboration between illustrator myself and graphic designer Mat Klicz, we have created a series of currency designs reacting to the story of 'Animal Farm' by George Orwell. Looking at inspiration of the soviet constructivist propaganda posters and the communist era in particular, we have illustrated some of the novel’s main characters: Old Major, Napoleon, Snowball and Boxer.

Creating 'The Union of Socialist Farm Republics', we intended to show power and authority of the farm leaders, which is often a common theme within dictatorships. Taking the currency as a medium, we used our skills to illustrate and design what the world may look like if these animals managed to conquer over the humans. The designs combine brutalist and constructivist motifs with plasticity of children’s book, with references to soviet communism in a form of symbolic icons and Karl Marx's quote, "Nothing can have value without being an object of utility”.
