troost corridor- iteration II

radio troost
In an effort to re-stimulate the area, and revitalize the deteriorating building stock, we are proposing to construct a new radio station within a mass of vacant structures. The initial success of a radio station is not dependant on the public's immediate interaction rather it inherently broadcasts itself out to the surrounding area, attracting its own interest. In order to actively engage the immediate community, we are proposing additional programmatic aspects such as a record store, a small lounge and space for live performances. Inside the radio station we worked to create a dynamic relationship between old and new construction, weaving the new infill in and around the existing conditions. We also conceptually explored spatial depths and dimensions, allowing the varied programmatic aspects to collage and overlap one another, creating rich interior spaces. Attempting to engage the public social realm of Troost, the main dj booth extends over the sidewalk placing them on the street while framing the main entrance below. The record store/ performance space features large sliding doors that effectively allow the space to spill out into the street when desired.
