Urban regeneration in Barga (Tuscany)

Urban regeneration competition

Barga, Tuscany, Italy

Barga is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The old town of Barga retains its medieval alleys and stairways and is dominated by the imposing bulk of the Duomo. The fog adds magic and mistery through the alleys and sometimes it prevents you from seeing the valley. Barga is considered the most Scottish town in Italy due to its Twinning partnership with East Lothian.
The city of Barga, in order to encourage landscape-environmental development and the social repossession
ofthe inner area “Giardino” involved in traffic criticalities and the conflict of different activities and services, is promoting an urban renewal competition.The aim is to achieve a renovation that combines urban safety with an improved landscape and architectural value.
In summary project proposals must take into account the following strategic objectives:

· Urban redevelopment and improvement of the existing buildings quality;
· Functional study aimed to reorganize road net, parking spaces, pedestrian routes, social gathering places and parks;
· Relocating activities and public services not suitable in terms of accessibility, functionality and logistics;
· Redevelopment of the marketplace area or research alternative solutions;
· Identify the type of materials and street furniture to be used, based on sustainability.
