novum 09.17 »book design«

This issue focuses on book design and we present interesting projects from historical paperback covers to art and cookbooks as well as commercial publications that are far from ordinary.

For our focus theme this month on book design, we of course came up with the idea of leather. But to get that typical »crocodile structure«, we didn´t want to skin any animal. By a lucky coincidence, Gmund was just launching a new paper called Gmund Leather at the very moment we were planning for this issue (you can also read an interview about this paper in the magazine). At first sight this material is hard to distinguish from real leather. Available in 240 to 350 gsm, this »imitation leather« made of FSC-certified pulp can be used for a wide variety of applications and finishes. Our Art Director Tobias Holzmann decided on a special colour for his design: »The cover therefore shows those elements that the reader normally does not see. Enlarged or reduced in size, rotated and overlaid – the different levels merge into an abstract image and appear here – exceptionally – in the foreground.«
