IMMERSION BLENDER CONCEPT

Immersion Blender is a kitchen appliance used to blend ingredients, soups or sauces in the container in which they are being prepared. 
Being a hand held professional tool, the design has to consider ergonomics, performance, mobility, sustainability and elegance. 
Most immersion blenders on the market look like sticks which will force the user to hold the product in a way that is limiting the maximum control & movement. 

DESIGN OPPORTUNITY

The product has to be designed around the idea of fluid movement and usability. Therefore, the shape has to provide grip and comfort while bringing the controls close to hand. That way, the operation can be done with just one hand instead of two thus creating an intuitive kitchen tool.
- Design a blender that provides neutral holding angle for wrist.
- Bring the controls close together and orient them in a way that makes one-hand operation possible while holding the tool
- Maximize the control and maneuverability
- Manage the power cord in a way that doesn’t interfere with mixing containers, while it is out of hand’s way
 

DESIGN EVOLUTION

As the sketches progressed, the product started to form around the hand more. The idea was to provide the most control and comfort possible for the wrist. The next stage is to prove the usability of these sketches through prototyping. 


DESIGN SOLUTION

The electrical cable folds backwards in order to prevent from interfering with mixing containers while providing enough clearance for operating hand by going up and over. Also, the layout of controls and the shape of this product makes handling and operating possible by just one hand. Usually, other immersion blenders separate the ON/OFF switch from the speed selector and thus forcing the operator to use both hands in order to tweak the speed while mixing food at the same time. 

DESIGN FEATURES

The use of a rocker switch for the speed selector makes speed change quick and tactile. The ON/OFF power button provides a continuous speed without the need for pressing the button constantly. Activating the pulse button changes the ON/OFF button into a one-touch operation. Therefore, pressing the button will turn the motor on and lifting the finger from it will instantly turn it off. The display which indicates the speed of motor is behind a transparent thin plastic that passes through the light projected behind it.
